How to choose a SILO?

A guide to the right choice

The long experience in the design and construction of silos has allowed Agritech to meet almost all the needs of those who need to store feed, Safe and reliable feed or other substances by optimising all phases of silo use: from loading to delivery.

Agritech was thus able to produce a large number of silo variants as well as additional components and accessories adaptable to different needs. This vademecum aims to help define the optimal technical characteristics in order to choose the best possible solution.

Factors conditioning the choice of silo

  1. What it must hold: fiberglass silos are extremely ductile and can be used to hold very different materials: from feed to flour, from liquids to solid products such as pellets or salt. Over the years Agritech has developed dedicated solutions for the different materials that can be stored so we invite customers to indicate their needs so we can advise them on the most suitable product.
  2. Volume and quantity: along with the type of product to be stored, it is essential to define the volumes and quantities. Agritech’s production technique offers the possibility of choosing the same model of silos in different possible cubages to ensure the most appropriate solution for the individual customer’s consumption.
  3. Loading modes: again to meet different needs, there are a plurality of methods by which the silo can be refilled with material. From the simple lid that allows the silo to be opened at the top, to feeding systems integrated into the silo support structure or transportable external augers to feed multiple silos with the same procedure.
  4. Distribution mode: the cone, the lower part of the silo, is one of the critical elements of the silo itself because it is the part that bears most of the weight of the contained material and because it is from here that the contents must be picked up according to specific needs. Agritech provides more than a score of material withdrawal systems for which we invite you to consult the appropriate data sheet.
  5. Customization required: in addition to the various components and accessories that make up the silo, it is possible to customize the color and graphics of the silo.
  6. Weathering resistance: one of the main advantages of fiberglass over other materials concerns the level of resistance to weathering (rain, snow, salt spray), which allows for longer durations. Silo construction can also easily take into account specific needs such as particularly windy areas or high seismic risk.
  7. Smooth internal or external surface: different functional requirements may make the perfectly smooth surface preferred inside or outside the silo. Here too, the role of Agritech technicians is crucial.

Additional considerations

  1. Transport: the transport costs can have a certain impact on the purchase of silos, for this reason Agritech has designed silos to be easily transported by truck or container. Agritech has also built up an important network of distributors over the years to be even closer to end customers and optimize transport, assembly and service costs.
  2. Assembly: the silos are supplied “turnkey” in the required time and manner. The installation of silos requires specialized personnel able to position the silos in order to avoid any type of problem after installation.
  3. Service and maintenance: Agritech is able to intervene if necessary, either directly or through its own network of distributors in order to guarantee the maximum level of use throughout the useful life of the silo itself. The technicians systematically visit the countries in which Agritech operates to provide all the necessary support both during sales and during its use.
  4. Certifications: Agritech is proud of the certifications obtained during its production activity. In particular we point out the certificates UNI EN ISO 9001-2008 and STATIK.
  5. Quality and duration of the investment: buying a silo, or in general, a product Agritech you have the reasonable certainty to have invested in a equipment designed to last over time guaranteeing high levels of performance. Our aim is to avoid in any way the deterioration of the contents of the silos with infiltrations or breakages of various kinds, or to have to find alternative solutions while the silos are being repaired. Agritech has developed fiberglass processing techniques that guarantee its reliability and durability.

The main components of a silo

The structure of a silo is relatively simple, over the years Agritech has perfected a series of details that allow you to customize each individual silo in order to adapt it to the needs of each farmer.

To facilitate the choice of different options, we briefly explain the main components of a silo.

Each silo is anchored to a base which must be constructed according to the characteristics of the soil and the load it has to bear.

The lower part of the silo responsible for the distribution of the contents (sump) has a conical shape designed to facilitate the emptying of the silo itself and can be equipped with different extraction systems: from the simple damper to different types of screw can adapt the silos to the specific needs of the content and the plant that you want to realize.

In the upper part of the silos we find the lid, the loading system and the vent to ensure maximum care in the storage of the internal material.

The structure can be monolithic or divided into different horizontal or vertical sections according to transport needs. Remember that once installed the functionality of the silo is, in fact, the same regardless of the structure of the same.

Each silo can be equipped with a series of accessories that enhance its functionality such as the porthole for inspections and cleaning of the interior, the ladder to reach the top of the silos or the electronic systems for measuring the content available.

A last aspect not to be overlooked concerns the choice of having a smooth interior or exterior. This depends on the way in which the silo is built and may change its functionality.
